If I Really See You

For more than 12 years I have been contemplating these words of Rumi, given to me by my friend and Tai Chi instructor Dean Vusikas.

If I really see you,

I will laugh out loud
Or fall silent
Or explode into a thousand pieces

And if I don't
I will be caught in the stone and cement of my own prison.

I was contemplating them again over the course of the Thanksgiving Weekend.

The first line always pierces my heart, it addresses you, the reader, and refers to that type of seeing that goes beyond all limited perceptions, seeing the divine within you.

The next 3 lines talk about the wide variety of experiences that result from this seeing without limitations.

Rereading the last line, it struck me that no one can free us from our prison, because to attempt to do so, would mean that our prison was real to someone else besides us. A real teacher, will show us that we created our own prison. Once we realize that we created it, we have a choice, and once we have a choice, the prison ceases to exist.

P.S. I've never found the book that those words come from, if you know the name of the book, let me know.

Comments:
I have just found this other translation online:

"And if I see you, I will laugh out loud (with delight). Or I will fall silent (because I've been so deeply moved). Or I will explode into a thousand pieces (because I've been so inspired). And if I don't, I will be caught in the cement and stone of my own prison." --Rumi, poet

I will continue to search for a book that has this poem in it.

;)
